PRIVACY POLICY

DIEGEMA — AUDIOBOOK PLAYER — LAST UPDATED: OCTOBER 31, 2026

YOUR DATA IS YOURS: Diegema is a free, open-source (MIT) audiobook player for Android, iOS, macOS and Windows. There is no account, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking, and Overengineered Hobbies runs no server that receives your data.

This policy says what the app stores on your device and what it sends over the network. Publisher: Overengineered Hobbies.

01WHAT WE COLLECT

Nothing. Diegema does not send any information to Overengineered Hobbies, and it does not copy your data to any other device or service. We have no server for it to be sent to, and the app contains no analytics, crash-reporting or advertising code.

02WHAT STAYS ON YOUR DEVICE

  • Your library: the books you have added, their titles, authors and cover images.
  • Your listening progress, speed settings, bookmarks (and any notes you type into them), pins and sleep-timer and appearance settings.
  • Audiobooks you download, saved in a folder on your device.
  • The words you type into search, kept for 24 hours so repeat searches are quick, then discarded.
  • References to folders or files you choose to add from your own storage. Diegema reads them in place and never writes to, moves or deletes them. On Apple platforms it keeps a system "security-scoped bookmark" so it can reopen the folder next time.

You can remove a book from within the app at any time. Uninstalling the app removes its library, progress, bookmarks and settings. Audiobooks you downloaded into a shared folder are NOT removed by uninstalling, because they are your files: on Android 11 and later that is Audiobooks/Diegema, on Windows it is Audiobooks\Diegema in your user folder, and on a Mac it is the folder you chose. Delete them yourself if you no longer want them. On iPhone and iPad downloads are kept inside the app and are removed with it; they are excluded from iCloud backup. On Android, the system's auto-backup may include the app's database and settings (including recent search words) in your own Google backup; that is controlled by your device settings, not by us.

03WHAT GOES OVER THE INTERNET

Diegema connects only to these services, and only to do what you ask:

  • librivox.org — the LibriVox catalogue (titles, authors, readers, chapter lists, links).
  • archive.org (the Internet Archive) — searching, cover images, streaming the recordings, and downloading them.
  • openlibrary.org — only if you ask for it (see below).

LibriVox books are public catalogue items, so their titles and covers are fetched from these services as part of browsing and opening them.

Your own files are never looked up automatically. For books you added from your own storage (single files, folders, library folders), Diegema takes any cover from the files themselves or from an image in the same folder, on your device. It sends nothing about them anywhere unless you open a book's menu and choose Find cover online. Only then are that book's title and author (taken from the file's tags or its file or folder name) sent to archive.org and, if needed, Open Library (and the cover then fetched from covers.openlibrary.org), along with your IP address. You are asked to confirm first.

Like any web request, these services can see your IP address, the time, and what you asked for, and they have their own privacy policies. Most of Diegema's requests identify the app to them with a User-Agent that names the app, its public GitHub page and our project contact address (overengineeredhobbies@gmail.com), as the Internet Archive asks of clients. Some requests (showing cover images and streaming audio) use the standard identifier of the networking library instead. Neither carries any information about you. Diegema sends no cookies and has no login.

If you tap a link to LibriVox (for example "volunteer to read"), your browser opens that site.

04PERMISSIONS THE APP ASKS FOR

  • Notifications (Android 13+): to show download progress and the playback controls.
  • Foreground service / background audio: so playback continues with the screen off.
  • Audio files / storage access (Android): to read the library folders you add, in place; Diegema never changes those files. Saving your downloads into the Audiobooks/Diegema folder on Android 11 and later needs no permission.
  • Camera: not requested. Diegema does not use the camera.

05CHILDREN'S PRIVACY

Diegema collects no personal information from anyone, including children. The catalogue is public domain literature, some of which was written for adults; it is not restricted by the app.

06THIRD PARTIES AND AFFILIATION

Recordings come from LibriVox (librivox.org), read and produced by volunteers, and are hosted by the Internet Archive. We strongly support LibriVox and its mission. Diegema is not affiliated with or endorsed by LibriVox or the Internet Archive.

07CHANGES

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with a new date. Because the app collects nothing, we expect changes to be rare.
